Recently, when the staff of the Ailao Mountain Subtropical Forest Ecosystem Research Station in Jingdong County, Pu'er City, were collecting photos with infrared cameras, they were surprised to find that multiple infrared cameras had captured clear images of the activities of black bears, a national second-class protected animal.A black bear poked its head into the range of the surveillance camera, picked up wild fruits, and then left.

A black bear came to the swamp and drank water leisurely. After drinking the water, it played in the mud, looking very adorable.

Black bears are national second-class protected animals. They mainly live in mountain forests and have a mixed diet. They feed on plant leaves, buds, fruits, and seeds. Sometimes they also eat insects, bird eggs, and small mammals. Bears are active frequently in Ailao Mountain.

According to the staff of Ailao Mountain Ecological Station, infrared cameras are a very important means for the Ailao Mountain Ecological Station to detect large terrestrial animals within a radius of 100 square kilometers in the Ailao Mountain area. They are mainly used for large terrestrial animals, as well as relatively large chicken-like birds such as white pheasants and cloud chickens. They were installed in succession since 2015. So far, more than 20 large mammals have been photographed, and there are also dozens of other bird species, which is of great help to biodiversity research.

In recent years, the Ailao Mountain Ecological Station has focused on combining ecological protection with scientific research. Through infrared cameras, field monitoring probes and other technical means, it has increased the monitoring of the ecosystem of the Ailao Mountain Nature Reserve, making green mountains and clear waters a gold mine and a home for endangered species.

In the next step, the Ailao Mountain Ecological Station will conduct follow-up surveys to find out the population and distribution status of protected animals in the Ailao Mountain area and the endangering factors, so as to carry out targeted research and protection work.
